CEDAR FORK BAPTIST CHURCH RECORDS (1844-1869)

These records are compiled from microfilmed records of Cedar Fork Baptist Church (TN State Library and Archives, Accession No. 263). Unlike most Baptist Church minutes, there is not a single compiled list of members. I have compiled these members based upon the minutes.
"On the 4th Saturday in July 1844 The Presbytery consisting of Brethen Thomas F. CARTER, Washington BALLARD, George M. CLARK, Isaac MINTON met at Mark S. MILLERs on the Cedar Fork of Paint Rock in Roane County, Tennessee according to an order of Prospect Church for the purpose of endevering to extend an arm and establishing the same at the above named place properly authorised . . . opened the door for the reception of the following viz Jesse UNDERWOOD, Polly UNDERWOOD, Eliga UNDERWOOD, Margaret UNDERWOOD and Margaret MESSIMORE"

(page 22) Jan 1860 "Took up the case of Sister Catharine PARKER and on the report of the committee took up a charge against the sister for her unchristian like conduct vis. having frequent private intercourse with one P.C. CULVAHOUSE and from her own acknowelgment agree with the said CULVAHOUSE to leave her husband and run away with him and after investigation of the case by having the evidence the church declare nonfellowship against her for her conduct."
(page 22), Feb 1860. Aaron PARKER requested the church to recind an act of last meeting declaring nonfellowship against his wife and to grant her a new hearing.
(page 24), Apr 1860, organization of Union church in Stockton Valley which was read and approved by the church and ordered to be spread on the record which as follows vis where as in November 1858 Bro. Samuel BURNETT and others of anti missionary Baptist met at a School house in Stocktons valley and enrolled their names for the purpose and to organize a church composed of members of each division of the Baptist . . ."
(page 42), January 1865, "No church session in January 1865 owing to raid made by the rebels."

(page 43), March 1865, "resolved that we declare a non fellowship against all aides and abetters of the rebelion until satisfaction be made by them to the church in the letter and spirit of the Gospel then the death of Sister Jane MINTON or JILES reported and ordered to be put on record."
(page 43) Apr 1865, "death of Sister Martha WHALEY reported."
(page 58), Jan 1868, "We regret to record the death of our beloved sister Tempy J. MILLER wife our Brother and Deacon M.S. MILLER this Sister departed this life December 28, 1867 She was a pure orderly member of our Justice . . ."
(page 110), Oct 1876, "Resolutions which was adop[t]ed Bro. Isaac MINTON who was a good and faithful member in this church but God from among us but we feel our loss is his eternal gain. Sister Kiz CULVAHOUSE was taken from us by death whom we esteamed as a good sister we mour her loss."
(page 187), Jan 1890. We record the death of Sister Susan WALKER who died January 5, 1890. We believe she has gone to rest. We also record the death of Sister Elizabeth COOLEY who died January 25, 1890 aged about __ years She was a good woman and our loss is her eternal gain.
(page 208), September 1892, We record the death of Sister Jane WALKER who died September 7, 1892.
(page 214), June 1893. We are sorry to have to record the death our beloved sister Elizzabeth WHALEY who died March 26, 1893 We believe she has gone from labor to reward this teaches us that we should all be ready for we know not the hour the summon may come.
(page 215), August 1893, We record the death of our sister Susan A. BRACKETT wife of our Bro. and Deacon J.M. BRACKETT who died August 17, 1893. She was a good woman and has gone from labor to reward.
(page 216), Sept 1893, We record the death of Sister Mary E. MILLER who died September 1, 1893 and has gone to her reward in Heaven She was a faithful christian and our loss is her eternal gain.
(page 222), May 1894, We are sorry to have to record of our beloved sister Emmaline PHIFER wife of our brother and Deacon W.F. PHIFER who died May 15, 1894 and was taken from her trials and suffering here on earth to her reward in heaven but our loss is her eternal gain.
(page 223), June 1894, We record the death of our sister Sallie SCOTT who died June 8, 1894.
(page 224), August 1894, We record the death of Sister Maggie SCOTT who died August 14, 1894. We believe our loss is her gain.
(page 226), Nov 1894, We record the death of Sister Elizzabeth HENSLEY who died November 2nd, 1894. She was an orderly walking christian and has gone from labor to her reward in Heaven.
(page 227), Dec 1894, We record the death of our beloved Sister Elizzabeth ROSE who died November 25, 1894. She was a good girl and always honored her profession by a godly walk always wanting to do her masters will She had a good christian influence She lived an examplary christian life but no she has gone from Laber to live Jesus in Heaven She left bright evidence she was ready to go our loss is her eternal gain.
(page 233), Sep 1895. We are sorry to record the death of Sister Jane KILE who fell asleep in Jesus on Monday evening September 16, 1895 but we feel that our loss is her eternal gain She lived an exemplary christian life she always filled her seat in the church house when she was able to get there She was always glad when the 4th Saturday and Sunday would roll around when she could get to go to Cedar Fork her house was always a welcome home for her Pastor but she is gone to reap her reward in Heaven. So let us follow her example and we will meet in Heaven part to part no more.
(page 234), Oct 1895. We record the death of our Bro. William H. SCOTT who died October 9, 1895 and has gone to his reward in Heaven.
(page 237), Apr 1896. We record the death of our beloved Sister Leathy M. CULVAHOUSE who died January 16, 1896. She always lived an upright christian life since she professed religion but she has gone from laber to reward.
(page 248), Jan 1898. We record the death of beloved sister Susan JOHNSON who died January 3, 1898 But we beleave our loss is her eternal gain. She always lived an upright christian life but she is done toiling here and has gone to her reward in Heaven just before she died She clapped her hands and said "Glory I'll soon be at home" let us all be ready.
(page 250), July 1898. We record the death of our Brother Isreal SCOTT who died July 28, 1898 but our loss is his eternal gain.
(page 252), Sept 1898. We record the death of our beloved sister Mary A. MILLER wife of our Bro. and Deacon A.J.M. MILLER who died September 19, 1898. She was a faithful member of the church but she will never be with us at Cedar Fork again. She left bright evidence that she had gone to Heaven to meet many that had gone before farewell sister for a little while.
(page 255), Feb 1899. We feel sad to record the death of Sister Hannah D. MONTGOMERY who died February 13, 1899. She was a good christian woman and has gone to her reward in Heaven. We also record the death of Sister Hattie WALKER who died in February 1899.
(page 279). August 1902. We record with a sad heart the death of Sister Sarah C. BRACKETT She profess religion at Union Stockton Valley church in 1881 under the preaching of Rev. W.C. BURNETT Joined the Baptist Church at Zion church in October 1881 and was baptised by Rev. F.H. HALL got a letter and joined the Baptist Church at Cedar Fork in September 1889(?). She was a good woman and honored her profession by a Godly walk She allways attended her church meeting when able She was always ready to visit the sick and help them and with kind words to cheer(?) them up She was a peaceable woman wanting to live in peace with every body in her last sickness she was patient trusting in Jesus whom she had learned to love. She lived and dide a christian She died August 23, 1902 aged 35 years 1 month and 26 days She was laid to rest in the Fooshee cemetery. The funeral services was conducted by Rev. J.H. WYRICK Farewell Sister. We will soon meet again.
(page 286), July 1903, We record the death of Sister Minnie RABY who was borne October 12, 1876 and died July 9, 1903. She joined Cedar Fork church by experience and was baptised by Rev. S.H. WALKER in September 1900. She lived a consistent christian. She always attended her church meeting when able to get there She had a good christian influence of her associates She honored her profession by a Godly walk Cedar Fork will miss but heaven has gained a preasious jewel in her last illness she said she was ready to go that nothing was in her way she said "Oh how Sweet it is to die in the arms of Jesus" She told her friends not to grieve after her for she was going to Heaven where there would be no criples ones she was laid to rest in the Fenders cemetery Funeral services was conducted by Revs. J.H. WYRICK and S.H. WALKER May we all follow her example until we meet her in Heaven Part Farewell sister for a while.
(page 288), Sep 1903, We record the death of Sister Martha EASTER who died September 1, 1903 She said in her dying hours that her way was clear for Heaven. She told her friends not to weep for She was going to her bright home in Heaven.
(page 289-290), Dec 1903. We record the death of Bro. Clifford BRACKETT who was born February 29, 1884, he professt religion in the fall of 1901 and joined Cedar Fork church in September 1903 and was baptised by Rev. H.C. PARDUE Clifferd lived a consistent christian he was a good boy to visit the sick and wait on them during the last revival meeting he was greatly revired(?) and said repeatedly to the church that he was on his way to heaven But now he is gone and we beleave our loss is his eternal gain he died December __ 1903 aged 19 years __ months and __ days. We also record the death of our brother and Deacon Andrew J.M. MILLER who professed religion in 1884 and joined Cedar Fork church in July 1885 and was baptised by Rev. J.W. WHALEY he lived on humble christian he honored his profession by a godly walk he was selected by the church, and ordained a Deacon on the 4th Sunday in September 1886, by a presbytery composed of Revs. J.W. WHALEY, P.R. BROWN and J.H. WYRICK which office he filled with honor to him self and to the church he had a powerful influence for good he would visit the sick for and near he would always do anything the church said for him to do he was afllicted for about five years and a part of the time not able to go his sufferings was intense but he bore it all with christian fortitude ever trusting in Jesus whom he had learned to love but now Cedar Fork has lost one of her best members the community a good citizen and it will be a long time ere we look upon his like again may we all follow his example until we meet him in Heaven for he died December 26, 1903 aged about 65 years and was laid to rest in the Fooshee cemetery the funeral services was conducted by Rev. J.H. WYRICK.
(page 292), Feb 1904. We record the death of our Sister Nancy MILLER who was borne November 3, 1834 and died February 10, 1904 aged 79 years 3 months and 7 days. She was a good woman and a devoted christian. She honored her profession by a Godly walk She said in her last hours she was ready to go may we all like her be ready.
(page 293), April 1904. We record the death of our sister Catherine GALYON who died April 11, 1904 She was a good christian lady and lived an humble christian was a faithful member of the church She will be greatly missed at Cedar Fork where she had a good influence She died in the full tryumph of a living faith her labors on earth are ended but her days in heaven are just commensing.
(page 293), May 1904. We record the death of Sister Jane E. FLOID who died May 27, 1904 and has gone from Labor to her reward in Heaven.
(page 310), Nov 1906. We record the death of Sister Della MARTIN who died November 13, 1906. She said she was ready to go that all was well with her.
(page 314), May 1907. We sadly record the death of Sister Reana KILE who died May 1, 1907. She was a good christian lady and said she was ready to die.
(page 318), Jan 1908. We record the death of Bro. John KILE who died December 30, 1907 aged about ninty five years. Bro. KILE joined this church in August 1870 and was Baptised by Rev. Joseph WILSON and lived a consistent christian untill his death we mourn his death but we feel our loss is his eternal gain.
(page 327), Nov 1908. We record the death of our beloved sister Rachel BILLINGS who died October 29, 1908 aged 59 years one month and ten days . . .
(page 328), Jan 1909. We record the death of Bro. Oscar KILE who died January 29, 1909 . . .
(page 336), Feb. 1910. We sadly record the death of our beloved sister Orleana SHARP who was borne February 22, 1820 She professed religion at an early age She had been a member of this church ever since it was organized in August 1859 and also while it was an arm from Prospect church Cedar Fork never had a better member . . . She died or better to say fell a sleep in Jesus and went to Heaven on January 29, 1910 aged 89 years 11 months and 20 days. The funeral services was conducted by Rev. S.H. WALKER in a most impressive manner Cedar Fork has lost a good member . . .
(page 337), Feb 1910. We also sadly record the death of our beloved Bro. John H. MILLER who was borne on December 8, 1830 he professed religion in 1868 and joined this church in August 1881 and was Baptised by Rev. B.F. MORGAN . . . he was church clerk for near three years he was taken sick on the 24 of August 1909 and suffered intensely for near six months he said he was ready to go . . . at home he died February 14, 1910 aged 79 years 2 months and 6 days. The funeral services was conducted by Revs. P.R. BROWN and J.W. FERGUSON.
(page 338). Feb 1910. We also sadly record the death of our beloved brother and Deacon John P. GALYON who was born August 11, 1830 he professed religion in 1878 he joined this church in September 1878 and was Baptised by Rev. C.M. INGRAM he was ordained a Deacon in November 1882 which office he filled acceptable he lived a devoted christian . . .he died February 15, 1910 79 years 6 months and 3 days the funeral services was conducted by Rev. James PARDUE . . .
(page 339-340), Mar 1910. It is with a sadness of heart that we record the death of our beloved Sister Alice ELLIOT wife of Rev. J.W. ELLIOT who was borne August 26, 1868 She profest religion in the fall of 1888 and joined this church in November 1906 and was Baptised by Rev. J.W. FURGUSON . . . She was a teacher in the Sunday school . . .she was sick about six months . . . died or rather fell a sleep in Jesus and went to Heaven on March 19, 1910 aged 41 years 6 months and 23 days her body was taken to the church she loved so well where the funeral services was conducted by Rev. P.R. BROWN . . .
(page 343), Jun 1910. We record the death of Sister Sarah GALYON who joined this church in August 1877 and was baptised by Rev. C.M. INGRAM. . . She died June 22, 1910 aged 75 years. She was buried in the Fooshee cemetery. The funeral services was conducted by Rev. S.H. WALKER.
(page 344-346), Jul 1910. It is with a sad heard that we record the death of our dearly beloved sister Lou GALYON who was borne April 30, 1870. She profest religion at fifteen years of age and joined Cedar Fork church in September 1886 and was Baptised by Rev. P.R. BROWN . . she died with a Christian smile on her face or rather fell a sleep in Jesus and went to July 13, 1910 aged 40 years 2 months and 13 days. She was laid to rest in the Paint Rock cemetery to await the resarection morn the funeral services according to her own request was conducted by Revs. S.H. WALKER, R.M. WYRICK and J.W. FURGUSON in a most impressive manner. She has gone to join her two children on the other shore . .
