The 5th Tennessee Infantry was organized at Barboursville, Kentucky, March 28, 1862. Mustered out at Nashville, March 29 through June 30, 1865. Companies A, B, D, and F are made up mostly of Roane County soldiers.

I have belonged to the arm since my enlistment in August 1861. In the mean time my wife
has been afflicted with a lingering disease which will sooner or later prove fatal as I
fear, there being no person aside from me to provide for the wants and comfort of her and
my children the country being devastated, and supplies of provisions(?) scarce and
difficult to get &c. I feel that my services and presence are due my family and
humanity impels me to this the letter of my Resignation. Wherefore I do most respectfully
tender this my Resignation as major 5th Regt. Tenn. Vols. Infty. I certify upon honor that
I am not in any way Indexbted to the Govt. of the U.S. that I have no Govt. property in my
possession but what I am prepared to turn over to the proper officer on the acceptance of
my Resignation that I have not or been absent from my command without proper authority I
was last paid by my master Maj. BREWER to included 31st Oct. 1863 I desire that all ???
and allowance now due or that may become due me be stopped until I may procure from War
Dept. all necessary Receipts(?) as to a ???? and ??? stores &c. Hoping the same may at
once be accepted I am most respectfully your servant(?) &c.
