That they have just been informed that a Certain John & Thomas BROWN have
your Honorable body to grant them a Charter for a turnpike Road From Joseph KEMBROS
to Kinston. Your petitioners avers that no Such turnpike road ought to be Allowed, as there
is a Sufficient Number of hands living on and close adjacent to Said road to keep the same in

& Thomas BROWN about six or more hands, William BROWN Esq two hand. Elbert G.
SEVIER four hands. Samuel ESKREDGE at least Eight hands, and a much great Number of
white persons on and belonging to Said road more than belongs to any other road in Roane

Your petitioners Confidently state that the Object of said John & Thomas is
to impose a toll
on all persons Moving or travelling down the Tennessee Vally to Missipie and Alabama and
thro all the county leading Westwardly thro the state of Tennessee to the Western District,
