Transcribed by Mable H. Thornton (Mrs. Robert E.) Thornton (now deceased).
The 1805 Tax Records of Roane County is on file in the Tennessee State Archives. The 1802 and 1808 Tax Recordss were published in Emma Middleton Wells' History of Roane County (Chattanooga, no date) which also contains data on many families. The Goodspeed Publishing Company's History of Tennessee . . .East Tennessee Edition (Nashville, 1887) contains biographical material relating to some of the early settlers. Capt. W.E. McELWEE (1837-1929) wrote a series of articles on local history which were published in The Rockwood Times in 1910 and 1911. Microfilm copies of these newspapers are available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
In 1805 Roane County included much of the area which fell into Rhea and Bledsoe Counties upon their creation in 1807. Many of the names on this Records are of record in Rhea, Bledsoe and Morgan Counties.
